Africa Can’t Afford To Be Bystanders In Tech Advancement – Amina Mohammed

UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed has warned that Africa must be proactive in shaping the use of emerging technologies, stressing that the continent cannot afford to remain passive.

Speaking at the 2025 Africa Chiefs of Defence Staff Summit in Abuja, she noted that insurgent groups were exploiting digital tools and improvised devices to fuel terrorism, while technology was also being misused to spread hate, manipulate elections, and undermine democracy.

Mohammed highlighted that artificial intelligence could equally provide solutions—such as predicting displacement, tackling food insecurity, and detecting landmines—but cautioned that its risks must be managed.

She urged stronger regional cooperation among African nations, warning that division gives adversaries their greatest advantage.
