Minister Bianca Ojukwu Meets Ghana’s Foreign Minister Over Anti-Nigerian Protests.
Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, has urged calm amid rising tensions following viral videos of anti-Nigerian protests in Ghana.
Speaking during a joint press conference in Accra with Ghana’s Foreign Minister,Samuel Ablakwa, she assured that the situation on ground was not as alarming as portrayed online. In a statement issued by her media aide,Magnus Eze,she explained that President Bola Tinubu sent her as a special envoy to investigate the situation firsthand. “We are here on a fact-finding mission following recent disturbances that circulated in Nigeria
But since arriving,we haven’t seen protests or unrest in the streets,”she said. She attributed the relative calm to swift intervention by the Ghanaian authorities. Odumegwu-Ojukwu emphasized the importance of the historic relationship between Nigeria & Ghana and warned against spreading inflammatory content that could inflame tensions.
She said her delegation had met with government officials, community leaders, and individuals involved in the issue to ease concerns.
She also called for the revival of the Nigeria-Ghana Joint Commission to enhance bilateral relations and citizen-level engagement. Ghana’s Foreign Minister, Samuel Ablakwa, reaffirmed his government’s commitment to safeguarding all residents, Ghanaians and foreigners alike.
He confirmed that the viral videos did not reflect the current reality, noting that dialogue was ongoing with both local citizens and the Nigerian community. He also addressed the controversy involving a Nigerian accused of attempting to establish a “kingdom” in Ghana, clarifying that territorial claims were not involved.
Ablakwa stressed the need to avoid repeating the mistakes of the past, referencing Ghana’s Aliens Repatriation Order and Nigeria’s 1983 “Ghana Must Go” expulsion.“If not managed properly, history could repeat itself. We must work together to prevent that,”he said.
