We’ll Make Lagos Uninhabitable for Criminals,” Taskforce Warns After Iyana-Ipaja Scam Bust.
According to a report by PM News on Sunday, July 27, 2025, the Lagos State Taskforce has arrested six individuals accused of running a deceptive scam targeting passersby with promises of Android phones that never existed.
The suspects—Amaike Nelson (43), Kenneth Opuana (56), Oguntade Olusegun (63), Ogologo Obi (29), Goodluck Abel (28), and Oluwafunmilayo Adebimpe (19)—were arrested in a sting operation at Iyana-Ipaja after they allegedly duped 19-year-old student Rukayat Kamilu.
“She was passing by when one of them, an older man, stopped her and pretended to need help picking a lucky number,” explained Gbadeyan Abdulraheem, the Taskforce’s Director of Public Affairs. The scam quickly escalated. After she "lost" the game, the group seized her phone and demanded ₦100,000 to return it.
The suspects reportedly used empty Android phone boxes as props to lure victims into the fraudulent game. Following swift action based on credible intelligence, Taskforce officials arrested all six suspects and recovered evidence.
They were arraigned on five counts, including fraud, extortion, conspiracy, and theft. All pleaded guilty and have been remanded pending the next court date on August 7, 2025.
Taskforce Chairman CSP Adetayo Akerele, who led the operation, made the agency’s position clear: “We’ll make Lagos uninhabitable for criminals,” he said, adding that criminal behaviour will not be tolerated under any guise.
The Taskforce has urged residents to remain alert and report suspicious activity through the “See Something, Say Something” initiative. The operation reflects broader efforts to protect Lagosians, particularly during tough economic times when fraud is on the rise.
