Crackdown On ‘7/7 Cultism Day’ Went wrong In Lagos as Police Arrest Numerous Suspected Cultists.

Punch Newspaper reported on Thursday, July 10, 2025, that police efforts across Lagos State have led to the arrest of several suspected cultists during the notorious “7/7 Cultism Day,” a date often linked to violent clashes between rival cult groups.

Ahead of the day, on Sunday, July 6, the Lagos Police Command issued a stern warning to cultists and deployed various tactical units, including the Anti-Cultism and Special Tactical Squads, the Police Mobile Force, and the State Intelligence Department, to curb potential violence.

Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, had earlier disclosed that 52 individuals were apprehended during raids on suspected cult locations, stating they were planning coordinated attacks.

Further operations were carried out on July 7 in known hotspots such as Ikorodu, Idimu, Mushin, Bariga, and Iyana Iba, where cult members were believed to be gathering to mark the day.

According to law enforcement sources who spoke with PUNCH, the crackdown was based on actionable intelligence and support from residents. “Many of the suspects were caught with dangerous items including weapons and charms,” one officer reported.

Another police source stated the suspects have been moved to the state headquarters for in-depth investigation and potential legal action. A public parade of the arrested individuals is under consideration, though not yet confirmed.

“The crackdown isn’t limited to just 7/7,” an officer said. “It will continue as part of ongoing efforts to ensure public safety across Lagos.”

Commissioner of Police Olohundare Jimoh held a strategy meeting with tactical unit leaders on July 6, instructing them to stop any cult-related disturbances. He assured the public that the police are maintaining high vigilance to protect all Lagos residents and visitors.
