SERAP Urges President Tinubu To Set Up Independent Panel To Probe Alleged Alterations In Nigeria’s Newly Gazetted Tax Laws

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on President Bola Tinubu to urgently establish an independent panel of inquiry to investigate allegations that Nigeria’s newly gazetted tax laws were materially altered after being passed by the National Assembly. In a Freedom of Information request signed by its deputy director, Kolawole Oluwadare, SERAP urged the President to ensure a transparent, impartial, and thorough investigation into the lawmaking process. The organisation alleged that substantive provisions, including new coercive fiscal powers, were inserted or removed without legislative approval, undermining constitutional standards, the rule of law, and separation of powers. SERAP also demanded the publication of certified true copies of the tax bills passed by parliament and the final laws signed and gazetted by the Federal Government, warning that it would pursue legal action if corrective steps are not taken within seven days.
