South-West Governors Renew Demand for State Police, Approve Regional Security Fund

South-West governors have renewed their call for the creation of state police as insecurity intensifies across Nigeria. Meeting in Ibadan on Monday, the governors also approved the establishment of a South-West Regional Security Fund to strengthen coordinated security operations across the six states.

The meeting, chaired by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, was attended by governors of Ogun, Ondo, Ekiti, and Oyo, while Osun was represented by its deputy.

The new fund, to be managed by the DAWN Commission, will support joint operations, intelligence sharing, and rapid response efforts. The governors also raised concerns about unregulated interstate migration, calling for stronger border monitoring and closer collaboration with NIMC to verify identities and prevent criminal infiltration.

Other key resolutions include:

  • A live digital intelligence-sharing platform for real-time threat alerts and inter-state communication

  • Tougher regulation of illegal mining due to its security and environmental risks

  • Federal support for deploying Forest Guards to reclaim forest areas used by criminal groups

The meeting comes amid worsening insecurity nationwide, including mass abductions in Niger and Kebbi states, attacks on churches in Kwara, and killings of police officers in Bauchi and Borno. The governors said urgent, coordinated action is needed to protect communities and restore public confidence.
