Kaduna Anglican Bishop Slams Tinubu, Governors Over Early 2027 Campaigns

The Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Kaduna, Most Reverend Timothy Yahaya, has urged President Bola Tinubu, members of the National Assembly, and state governors to prioritize effective governance over premature campaigning for the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on the current political climate, the cleric criticized leaders for shifting attention to retaining power rather than tackling Nigeria’s pressing socio-economic challenges.
"Before this regime is even two years in office, they’ve already started politicking. This is a bad culture of governance in our country," Bishop Yahaya lamented. "I want to plead with the authorities: let’s play down the politics. How can we finish one election cycle and immediately start campaigning for the next? What has happened to governance?"
He further appealed for a ban on political activities until just nine months before the next election to ensure elected officials dedicate their full attention to delivering good governance.
"Honestly, it’s not a good development. We are not seeing good governance, yet there are campaign billboards everywhere. It’s very insulting and degrading. Other civilized nations will think we are jokers," he added.
Bishop Yahaya also condemned opposition politicians who have defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), labeling them as opportunists motivated by self-interest rather than ideological conviction.
“These politicians should ask themselves: do they know where they’re coming from or where they’re going? Many of those in the APC today—70 percent of them—were in the PDP before. It’s the same group of people, all opportunists. Wherever the national cake is, they want a piece of it," he said.
He continued: "Frankly, there’s no real opposition in Nigeria today. If the national cake were to move to another party, these same politicians would follow it. Their pursuit of power and leadership is driven purely by self-interest."
