Nigerian Navy Detains 12-Year-Old Pupil Over Comments Made By Mum On PTA WhatsApp Group

A 12-year-old SS1 student of the Nigerian Navy Secondary School, Kuje — Aamanee Adebiyi-King — was reportedly detained in the school’s Naval Police office after her mother had a disagreement with a naval officer on the school’s PTA WhatsApp group.

The incident began when the mother criticised parts of the proposed PTA constitution, saying it seemed to “enslave parents,” and questioned why students were being forced to take 13 subjects when WAEC allows only nine. Her comments led to her removal from the group, after which a naval Sub-Lieutenant allegedly sent her insulting private messages. She responded in the same tone.

The officer later summoned her to appear before a school panel, a directive she ignored.

The next morning, the family received a message from someone claiming to be SLt B.T. Auwalu, the school’s Regulating Officer, informing them that their daughter had been taken to the Naval Police office and would remain there until her parents appeared before the Commandant.

The father said he was shocked that the school detained his daughter — who had done nothing wrong — to force her mother to comply with the summons.
