NOA DG Warns Against Foreign Propaganda, Urges Media To Protect National Unity

The Director-General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Lanre Issa-Onilu, has cautioned Nigerians against falling for foreign propaganda aimed at portraying the country as unsafe or divided along religious lines.

Speaking in Abuja on Wednesday, Issa-Onilu warned that such narratives could lead Nigeria into chaos similar to Iraq and Libya, citing false Western claims that led to instability in those nations.

He dismissed recent comments by U.S. Senator Ted Cruz, who accused the Nigerian government of complicity in the “systematic killing of Christians,” describing Cruz as lacking “respect, dignity, or integrity.”

Issa-Onilu urged the media to remain patriotic and avoid being used for information warfare, which he described as one of the most potent threats to national sovereignty.

Also speaking, Grace Ike, Chairperson of the NUJ FCT Council, emphasized the media’s critical role in promoting unity, ethical standards, and social cohesion, noting that its influence in shaping national values has never been more vital.

The controversy stems from Ted Cruz’s comments on a podcast with Bill Maher, where he alleged that Christians in Nigeria were being systematically targeted. The Nigerian government and the Senate have both dismissed the claims as false, divisive, and misleading, stressing that insecurity in the country is driven by terrorism, banditry, and criminality, not religion.
