BREAKING: Former Petroleum Minister & UNIMAID VC, Prof. Jubril Aminu, Passes Away

Nigeria has lost one of its most prominent scholars and statesmen. Professor Jubril Aminu, a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID), and seasoned diplomat, has passed away.

The news was confirmed on Thursday, marking the end of an era for a man whose career spanned academia, politics, and diplomacy.

Prof. Aminu was widely known for his firm leadership style, especially during his tenure as UNIMAID Vice-Chancellor, where he controversially expelled over 500 students in a bold move aimed at restoring discipline and academic integrity.

His service as Nigeria’s Petroleum Minister during the military era placed him at the center of critical decisions in the oil and gas sector — one of the country’s most strategic industries.

He later went on to serve as a Nigerian Ambassador to the United States and also as a Senator representing Adamawa Central, cementing his legacy as a public servant with wide-ranging influence.

Love him or loathe him, Prof. Jubril Aminu was a figure who stood firmly by his convictions — and left a legacy of strong-willed leadership.

His death has sparked mixed reactions across social and political circles, with many praising his intellect and contributions to national development, while others recall the controversies that shaped his legacy.
