Flick: Yamal Will Be Driven to New Heights After Ballon d’Or Defeat
Barcelona coach Hansi Flick believes Lamine Yamal will be even more motivated after narrowly missing out on the Ballon d’Or to former teammate Ousmane Dembélé.
The 18-year-old winger finished second in the 2025 Ballon d’Or voting behind Paris Saint-Germain's Dembélé at the prestigious awards ceremony in Paris on Monday. However, Yamal was honored with the Kopa Trophy, recognizing the best young player in the world.
“I spoke with him yesterday, and he’s taking it the right way,” Flick said during a press conference on Wednesday. “It’s a motivation for him for the coming years.”
Flick praised Dembélé’s win, acknowledging the unpredictable nature of the voting process.
“Dembélé deserved it too. It’s a vote, and anything can happen. Yamal accepted it well, and he’s motivated to prove himself this season. Maybe next year he’ll be in the Ballon d’Or race again.”
Yamal played a key role in Barcelona’s domestic treble last season, helping the Catalan giants win La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup.
However, the winger will miss Thursday’s La Liga match against Real Oviedo due to a groin injury, as Barcelona look to close the five-point gap with leaders Real Madrid, who defeated Levante on Tuesday.
Despite Yamal’s absence, Flick remains confident in his squad.
“I never focus on who’s missing,” he said. “I concentrate on the players available and who can start. Every lineup we put out is capable of winning. I’m happy with my team.”
In other injury news, midfielder Gavi is expected to be sidelined for four to five months after undergoing knee surgery on Tuesday. The 21-year-old had only recently returned from a torn ligament that kept him out for nearly a year following an injury in November 2023.
“We need to take things step by step with him,” Flick added. “He’s just 21 and has a long career ahead. He plays with a big heart and so much passion for this club. We're all here to support him and help him get back to his best.”
