Over 100 Pupils Forced Out of School as Storm Destroys Primary School in Kebbi

A civic accountability group, MonITNG, has raised alarm over the collapse of Kulu Koji Primary School in Jega Local Government Area of Kebbi State, where a recent windstorm destroyed the only school structure in the community, forcing more than 100 children out of classrooms.

In a statement addressed to Governor Nasir Idris on Tuesday, the group described the situation as “heartbreaking,” stressing that the community has been denied access to basic education.

“This is the only primary school in the community, yet after a heavy downpour and windstorm blew away the entire structure, pupils have been forced to stop going to school. Over a hundred children are now completely out of classrooms, their right to education denied,” MonITNG said.

The organisation noted that the last renovation of the school was in 2014 under the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC). Since then, no intervention has been made, despite federal allocations for education.

It accused both the past administration of Governor Atiku Bagudu and the current government of Nasir Idris of neglecting the community while funding projects elsewhere.

“UBEC Nigeria disbursed โ‚ฆ250 billion across 36 states, with 27 states accessing โ‚ฆ121 billion. Kebbi State has failed to channel resources toward rescuing this school,” the group added.

MonITNG further criticised the state government’s spending priorities, arguing that billions are spent on non-essential projects while education and health remain neglected.

Kebbi State has consistently ranked among states with the highest number of out-of-school children in Nigeria, a crisis worsened by the collapse of Kulu Koji Primary School.

The group urged Governor Idris to urgently intervene to restore education for children in the community.
