New Terrorist Group Mahmuda Launches Wave of Attacks in Kwara, Captures 15 Communities in Kaiama and Baruten LGAs
A new terrorist group known as Mahmuda has reportedly launched a series of coordinated attacks in Kwara State, Nigeria. According to reports, the group has taken control of 15 communities within the Kaiama and Baruten Local Government Areas (LGAs), leading to widespread displacement and fear among residents. The attacks have resulted in the deaths of at least three villagers and the destruction of several properties.
The Nigerian Senate has been alerted to the situation, with lawmakers urging the military to take decisive action against the group. Communities such as Kaiama, Karonzi-Yashikira in Baruten LGA, and Wawa and Babanna areas in Niger State have been identified as hotspots for terrorist activities. These areas have witnessed a surge in kidnappings and killings, causing residents to live in constant fear. The Senate has called for a comprehensive military operation to dismantle the group's hideouts and restore peace to the affected regions.
The Mahmuda group is believed to be operating near the Kainji Lake National Park, an area that has become a haven for various criminal elements due to its dense forest vegetation. The park's vast expanse, covering approximately 5,341 square kilometers, has made it challenging for security forces to effectively monitor and control. Reports indicate that park rangers have lost control of the park to terrorists, further complicating efforts to combat the insurgency.
In response to the escalating insecurity, the Senate has urged the establishment of a Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Babanna, Kwara State, and the construction of a military barracks in Kaiama. Additionally, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has been called upon to provide relief materials to victims in the affected communities.
The situation remains dire, with residents urging the government to take swift and decisive action to restore peace and security to the region.
