INEC Chairman Swears In New RECs, Emphasizes Ethical Conduct and Adherence to Guidelines

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, on Friday formally swore in six newly appointed Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs), urging them to uphold the highest standards of integrity and adhere strictly to the electoral legal framework.

Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony, Yakubu reminded the new RECs of their crucial responsibilities, emphasizing that their conduct must always reflect the values of transparency, impartiality, and accountability.

“As you assume or resume duty, I urge you to focus squarely on your responsibilities,” he said. “You must at all times be guided by the electoral legal framework, the code of conduct for RECs, and the regulations and guidelines that govern the Commission’s operations. Above all, act in good conscience and never betray your oath of office.”

Yakubu also encouraged regular engagement with stakeholders and openness to constructive criticism, in line with the Commission’s commitment to transparency and public trust.

Among the new appointees, Johnson Alalibo Sinikiem and Mukhtar Umar Gajiram were reappointed for a second five-year term. Sa’ad Umar Idris and Mrs. Feyijimi Saseyi Ibiyemi, both long-serving INEC staff, were elevated to REC positions. Two newcomers to the Commission include legal practitioner Chukwuemeka Christopher Ibeziako and Umar Yusuf Garba, who brings extensive private sector experience.

With these appointments, Yakubu confirmed that all REC positions across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory have now been filled.
