Nigerian student flees UK after family threatens shame, prison over leaked photos

A Nigerian student studying in the United Kingdom has reportedly fled the country and cut all ties with her family after being confronted over leaked photographs deemed culturally and religiously offensive by her relatives and community back home.

The student, identified as Miss Gbemisola Esther Olawuyi, was said to have been summoned by her family after the images surfaced online, allegedly showing her involved in lesbianism.

According to sources, her family accused her of violating cultural, religious, and legal norms, and demanded her immediate return to Nigeria to “face consequences.”

Shortly after the confrontation, the family terminated payment of her tuition and allegedly publicised the incident within their community in Ibadan, Oyo State, declaring they could not withstand the “disgrace” brought upon them.

The situation reportedly led to intense emotional distress for the student, who, fearing legal prosecution and the possibility of a 14-year prison sentence under Nigeria’s anti-same-sex law, disappeared from the UK and has not been seen since.

Further confirmation came through a station diary extract from Iyaganku Police Station in Ibadan, dated Monday, November 5, 2023.

In the entry recorded at about 14:33hrs, a community leader, Mr. Popoola Olawale, Chairman of the Edun Lapupan CDA in Lagelu LGA, reported Esther Olawuyi for committing lesbianism in the community.
