The Rise and Fall of Terwase Akwaza, aka Gana
Terwase Akwaza, popularly known as Gana, was one of the most feared and controversial figures in Benue State, Nigeria, from 2015 until his death in 2020. Born in Gbishe village, he grew up amid poverty and hardship, with rumors swirling that he possessed supernatural powers.
What began as petty theft soon escalated. Gana evolved into a full-fledged warlord, leading a militant group that controlled the troubled Sankera axis of Benue. He was infamous for his brutality, yet among some locals, he was also regarded as a Robin Hood-like figure. He reportedly built schools, awarded scholarships, and provided aid to struggling communities—actions that earned him loyalty and admiration in certain quarters.
In 2015, Gana accepted a government amnesty offer and briefly stepped away from violence. However, following allegations of his involvement in a high-profile murder, he returned to militancy. Despite multiple military offensives aimed at capturing him, he evaded arrest for years.
In 2020, Gana surrendered again during another peace initiative. But while being transported by security forces, he was reportedly killed under unclear circumstances. His sudden death sparked public outrage and suspicion, with many questioning whether he was deliberately silenced.
Today, Gana's legacy remains deeply polarizing—an uneasy blend of community heroism and violent rebellion.
