I Cried Seeing My Juniors Outrank Me — Ex-Soldier Accuses Nigerian Army General of Unlawful Demotion & Detention

A former Nigerian Army officer, Michael Jojor, has accused Major General A.A. Adekeye, former Commandant of the Nigerian Army Armour School (NAAS), of orchestrating his unlawful demotion, detention, and eventual resignation from the military.
Jojor, who joined the Army in June 2016 as part of the 75RRI, claims he was officially posted to 6 Division Garrison, Port Harcourt, but was later wrongfully declared AWOL (Absent Without Leave) by Maj. Gen. Adekeye in June 2023. According to Jojor, despite receiving proper clearance and evidence confirming his posting, he was arrested upon return to NAAS and detained in the guardroom for two weeks before being handed over to military police.
“I provided all necessary documentation and even Brig. Gen. T. Isa confirmed I was properly released. The military police cleared me of wrongdoing,” he said.
Despite this, Jojor alleges the Commandant bypassed due process and ordered his demotion from Lance Corporal to Private, along with 14 days of detention and a sudden deployment to the frontline.
“I endured it, hoping justice would prevail,” Jojor said, recounting the psychological toll. “I kept reaching out to senior officers for over a year but got no response. I cried watching my juniors wear ranks I had already earned.”
Eventually, the emotional distress led Jojor to resign on January 22, 2025.
“I was broken. My mental health was suffering. I had no option but to leave,” he said.
In a passionate online post, Jojor called out what he described as a culture of silence and abuse within the Army. “So many soldiers are experiencing the same or worse but are too afraid to speak up. I’m not hiding. Speaking up for my rights isn’t a crime,” he stated.
Attempts by journalists to reach the Nigerian Army for comment were unsuccessful. Calls and messages to spokesperson Lt. Col. Onyinyechi Anele went unanswered.
