Oil Marketers Raise Alarm Over Dangote’s Direct Fuel Distribution, Warn of Job Losses
Oil marketers under PETROAN have expressed deep concern over the Dangote Refinery’s plan to begin direct fuel distribution across Nigeria by August, warning it could wipe out thousands of jobs and create a monopoly.
Speaking on The Morning Brief on Channels Television, PETROAN President Billy Gillis-Harry urged the Federal Government and regulators, particularly the NMDPRA, to enforce the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) and prevent the refinery’s plan from sidelining depot owners, tanker operators, and retail outlets.
“If one massive company like Dangote begins free distribution, we’ll be pushed out of business,” Gillis-Harry said, noting that no consultation was held with existing stakeholders.
On June 15, Dangote Refinery announced it had procured 4,000 CNG-powered tankers for a free nationwide distribution of petrol and diesel to large buyers starting August 15. The refinery also unveiled a credit scheme for bulk buyers, allowing additional supply on bank-guaranteed credit.
PETROAN argues that such moves will suffocate smaller players and eliminate competition, calling on regulators to step in and interpret the PIA fairly.
“We don’t want one strong man. We want many strong players. Let’s all operate within the licenses we’ve been granted,” Gillis-Harry stressed.
