Early Life

Pope Shenouda III was born as Nazeer Gayed Roufail on August 3, 1923, in Egypt. He grew up in a simple Christian family and lost his mother at a very young age.

He completed his education in history at Cairo University and later worked as a teacher. But even then, his heart was not fully in worldly life. He longed for something deeper.

Call to Monastic Life

Nazeer decided to leave everything behind and dedicate his life to God. He joined a monastery in the desert, choosing a life of silence, prayer, and reflection.

In the monastery, he was given the name Father Antonios El-Souriany. Life there was simple and strict. He spent long hours praying, reading, and living away from the noise of the world.

This period helped him grow spiritually and prepared him for the great responsibility ahead.

Rise to Leadership

Because of his wisdom and strong faith, he was later chosen to serve as a bishop. His teachings were clear, deep, and easy for people to understand.

In 1971, he became the Pope of the Coptic Orthodox Church. This was a very important role, as he became the spiritual leader of millions of Christians.

As Pope, he took the name Shenouda III. His leadership marked a new era for the Church.
