Early Life
Pope Tawadros II was born as Wagih Sobhi Baki Soliman on November 4, 1952, in Mansoura, Egypt.
He grew up in a simple and disciplined Christian home where faith was part of daily life. His parents raised him with strong values, teaching him humility, respect, and devotion to God.
From a young age, he showed a quiet and thoughtful personality. He loved learning and spent much of his time reading and studying, which later shaped his path in life.
Education
Tawadros studied pharmacy at Alexandria University and graduated with a degree in pharmaceutical sciences.
He worked as a pharmacist for a few years, living a normal life like many young Egyptians. But deep inside, he felt a stronger calling toward spiritual service.
His love for the church continued to grow, and he began to spend more time in prayer and church activities.
Spiritual Calling
His life changed when he decided to dedicate himself fully to God. He joined the monastery of Saint Bishoy in Wadi El Natrun, one of the most important spiritual centers of the Coptic Orthodox Church.
There, he became a monk and took the name “Theodore,” meaning “gift of God.”
Monastic life was simple but strict. It involved prayer, fasting, and silence. These years shaped his character deeply and prepared him for greater responsibilities.
Rise in the Church
Due to his discipline and wisdom, he was later ordained as a bishop.
As a bishop, he served faithfully, focusing on organization, education, and strengthening the church community. He was known for being calm, practical, and deeply spiritual.
His leadership style was simple he listened more than he spoke, and he worked quietly behind the scenes to solve problems.
Becoming Pope
In 2012, after the passing of Pope Shenouda III, the Coptic Orthodox Church needed a new leader.
Through a sacred and traditional selection process, Tawadros was chosen to become the 118th Pope of Alexandria.
This was a historic moment. He became the spiritual leader of millions of Coptic Christians in Egypt and around the world.
Leadership and Challenges
As Pope, Tawadros II faced many challenges, including social tensions and difficult moments for Christians in Egypt.
Despite this, he remained a symbol of peace and unity. He often spoke about love, forgiveness, and coexistence between different religions.
He worked to strengthen relationships between Christians and Muslims and encouraged dialogue instead of conflict.
