🐢 The Tortoise and the Sky Feast: The Legend of Wisdom, Greed, and Consequence

The Tortoise 

Long ago, when the earth was still young and stories walked freely among men, animals spoke, reasoned, and lived like humans. Among them all, none was more famous, more cunning, or more talked about than the Tortoise.

He was small in size but vast in mind. His shell was hard, but his heart was full of tricks. People called him wise, but others whispered that his wisdom often walked hand in hand with greed.

This is the story of how the Tortoise reached the sky, deceived the birds, and fell back to earth… and how that fall made him a legend remembered for generations.

The News of the Sky Feast

One season, when the harmattan wind had just begun to fade and the earth smelled of fresh life, a rumor spread across the land.

The birds had received an invitation.

Not just any invitation but one from the Sky People, beings of great power and mystery who lived above the clouds. They were hosting a grand feast, a celebration of abundance, where food would never finish and joy would overflow.

Every bird was invited.

From the proud Eagle to the gentle Dove, from the clever Crow to the colorful Parrot, excitement filled the air. They gathered beneath a tall iroko tree, chirping and singing, preparing for the great journey.

The Tortoise, who was passing by, heard their conversation.

He stopped.

His eyes narrowed.

A feast in the sky? Food that never finished?

His mind began to race.

The Tortoise’s Plan

The Tortoise knew one thing he could not fly.

But he also knew something else where strength fails, cunning succeeds.

He approached the birds slowly, with a humble face and a soft voice.

“My friends,” he began, “I hear you are going to a feast in the sky. Such a beautiful opportunity. But look at me… I have no wings. Must I be left behind to suffer while you enjoy such blessings?”

The birds looked at him.

Some pitied him.

Others did not trust him.

But the Tortoise spoke sweetly, praising their kindness, reminding them of unity, of friendship, of how sharing was the way of life.

His words wrapped around their hearts like a gentle wind.

Finally, the Parrot spoke, “Let us help him. Each of us can give him a feather. With enough feathers, he can make wings.”

And so, one by one, each bird plucked a feather and gave it to the Tortoise.

The Tortoise gathered them all, tied them together, and formed wings.

He smiled.

His plan was working 

A Name for the Journey

As they prepared to leave, the Tortoise said, “In the land of the Sky People, it is custom to take new names. Names carry power. Let us each choose one.”

The birds agreed.

They chose names that reflected beauty, strength, and grace.

Then the Tortoise spoke again.

“My name shall be… All of You.”

The birds laughed, thinking it was strange, but they accepted it.

After all, what harm could a name do?

The Journey to the Sky

With wings attached, the Tortoise joined the birds.

They rose into the air.

Higher and higher they flew, past the trees, past the hills, into the open sky where clouds danced like spirits.

The Tortoise had never seen such beauty.

But even as he admired the view, his mind was not on wonder.

It was on the feast.

The Great Feast

When they arrived, the Sky People welcomed them warmly.

Tables were set.

Food was everywhere yams, fruits, soups rich with aroma, and dishes beyond imagination.

The birds were amazed.

They sat down, ready to eat.

But before they could begin, one of the Sky People asked, “Who is this feast prepared for?”

The Tortoise stood up quickly and said, “It is for All of You.”

The Sky People smiled.

“Yes, of course. The feast is for all of you.”

The Tortoise sat down.

And then… he began to eat.

He ate quickly.

He ate greedily.

He ate everything within his reach.

The birds watched in shock.

They could not protest, because the feast was for “All of You”… and that was the Tortoise’s name.

By the time he finished, there was little left.

The birds were hungry.

Their kindness had been repaid with deceit.

The Revenge of the Birds

The birds were angry.

Not with loud noise, but with quiet understanding.

They had been tricked.

And now, they would teach the Tortoise a lesson.

One by one, without a word, each bird took back its feather.

The Tortoise did not notice at first.

He was too busy resting, his stomach full.

But when it was time to return to earth, he tried to fly.

And he could not.

His wings were gone.

The birds looked at him and said, “You who call yourself All of You, eat your fill alone… now find your way home alone.”

And with that, they flew away.
The Fall

The Tortoise stood at the edge of the sky.

Below him was the earth far, far away.

Fear entered his heart.

For the first time, his cleverness had failed him.

He called out to the birds, but they did not return.

Then he saw the Eagle passing by.

“Please,” the Tortoise begged, “tell my wife to prepare soft things on the ground palm leaves, cloth, anything to break my fall.”

The Eagle agreed and flew down.

But when he reached the Tortoise’s home, he told the wife the truth.

“Your husband has deceived us. Do not prepare soft things. Let him face the result of his actions.”

The wife, shocked and disappointed, placed hard objects instead.

The Breaking of the Shell

The Tortoise took a deep breath.

Then he jumped.

He fell through the sky, spinning, tumbling, helpless.

Faster and faster he came down…

Until

CRACK!

He hit the ground with a force that shook the earth.

His shell broke into many pieces.

Pain filled his body.

But he did not die.

The Tortoise’s wife, seeing him broken, gathered the pieces of his shell and carefully put them back together.

That is why, till today, the Tortoise’s shell is not smooth but full of cracks and patterns.

Each line tells the story of his fall.

How the Tortoise Became a Legend

From that day on, the Tortoise was no longer just known as clever.

He became something more.

A symbol.

A lesson.

A legend.

People told his story around fires, in villages, to children and elders alike.

They spoke of his intelligence but also of his greed.

They admired his cunning but warned against his selfishness.

The Tortoise became a reminder that wisdom without humility leads to downfall.

That greed can destroy even the smartest mind.

That actions always carry consequences.

The Legacy of the Tortoise

Today, across many African cultures, the Tortoise is remembered as a trickster.

A character who teaches through mistakes.

A figure who shows that being smart is not enough you must also be good.

His cracked shell is not just a mark of injury.

It is a badge of history.

A reminder that even legends are shaped by failure.

And that sometimes, it is not victory that makes a story unforgettable…

But the lesson it leaves behind.
