Tinubu Orders Security Chiefs to End Benue Killings, Urges Peace Talks
President Bola Tinubu has reiterated his directive to security chiefs to restore peace and stability in Benue State, following a fresh wave of reprisal attacks that claimed dozens of lives.
In a statement released by his spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, the President expressed deep concern over the latest violence and emphasized the urgency of decisive action. He instructed the heads of intelligence, police, and military forces to coordinate security operations on the ground to halt the bloodshed and restore order.
The renewed presidential directive comes after Governor Hyacinth Alia confirmed the killing of 59 people in Yelewata, a border town reportedly attacked by suspected herdsmen from neighboring Nasarawa State. Speaking at the Government House, Alia stated that the casualty figure was based on physical counts conducted by security personnel in collaboration with affected families.
Reacting to the tragedy, President Tinubu condemned the killings as “inhuman and anti-progress,” calling on political and community leaders in conflict-prone areas to avoid provocative rhetoric that could escalate tensions.
“The latest news of mass killings in Benue is deeply distressing. We cannot allow this cycle of violence to persist. Enough is enough,” Tinubu said.
He directed security agencies to arrest and prosecute all perpetrators—regardless of affiliation—and stressed the need for leadership and responsibility among state actors.
“This is a critical moment for Governor Alia to rise above politics and act as a unifying statesman. He must immediately initiate dialogue and reconciliation among farmers, herders, and communities to achieve sustainable peace,” the President added.
Tinubu urged leaders across divides to work collaboratively, promote justice, and address grievances with fairness and transparency, noting that peaceful coexistence is possible when mutual respect and sincere engagement prevail.
