Love Found Me When I Wasn’t Looking (Episode 16)

Daniel’s POV

Work started faster than I expected.

My father didn’t ease me in he threw me straight into meetings, documents, negotiations. Long hours. Sharp conversations. Real responsibility. At first, it felt overwhelming, but slowly, something clicked.

I was learning.

Not as his son.
As a man.

Every evening, when I got back to my apartment in Abuja, tired but fulfilled, there was one thing I looked forward to more than rest—Victoria.

We talked every day.

Sometimes texts.
Sometimes long voice calls that stretched into laughter and silence.
Sometimes video calls, when seeing her face felt necessary for survival.

That night, I watched her on the screen, wrapped in her bedsheet, hair loose, eyes tired but warm.

“You look different,” she said, smiling.

“In a good way?” I asked.

“In a grounded way,” she replied. “Like someone who knows where he’s going.”

That did something to my chest.

Work was going fine for the first time, I could say that with confidence. I was earning more than I ever had. Not just promises real results.

So I did something simple.

I sent her money.

₦500,000.

Victoria’s POV

When I saw the alert, I froze.

I stared at my phone, blinked, then stared again.

₦500,000 credited.

I immediately called him.

“Daniel!” I exclaimed the moment he picked up. “What is this?”

He laughed softly. “Good evening to you too.”

“Are you mad?” I said, half-laughing, half-shocked. “Why would you send me that kind of money?”

“For shopping,” he replied calmly. “And work things. You’ve been complaining about your laptop and shoes.”

My throat tightened. “You didn’t have to.”

“I wanted to,” he said. “Let me take care of you in the ways I can.”

I swallowed hard, emotions rising. “Thank you.”

“You don’t sound happy,” he teased gently.

“I am,” I said honestly. “I’m just… proud of you.”

That made him quiet for a moment.

Daniel’s POV

Hearing her say she was proud of me meant more than any deal I signed that day.

“I’m doing this for us,” I told her. “I want you to feel secure not pressured.”

She nodded on the screen. “I feel it. I really do.”

We stayed on video call while she tried on a dress she’d just bought earlier that week, laughing as she spun lightly.

“You see?” she said playfully. “Distance can’t stop this.”

“No,” I replied. “But it makes reunion sweeter.”

Work continued smoothly. My father noticed my effort, even if he didn’t say much. Meetings went well. Numbers improved. For the first time, I felt like I was building something solid something I could stand on without shame.

That night, before we ended the call, she said softly, “I miss you.”

I smiled. “I miss you more.”

Victoria’s POV

Life began to feel lighter.

School was good. Work was flowing. I used part of the money to fix what I needed, and the rest I saved. It felt good knowing we were both moving forward.

My mother noticed the change.

“You look happier,” she said one evening.

“I am,” I replied simply.

She didn’t argue. Not yet.

That night, Daniel and I talked again long, comfortable, full of plans and dreams whispered into phone speakers.

Distance still existed.

But fear didn’t own us anymore.

Because love was no longer just words.

It was effort.
Growth.
And proof.
