EPISODE 3: MARUWA, KEROSENE, AND A PROMISE THAT FAILED
With all our bags, we finally boarded a Maruwa (keke) to go home. ThDe engine rattled, the road bounced, and exhaustion weighed on us like another bag. When we arrived, we carried everything inside everything except one thing.
The kerosene.
We realized too late that we had left it inside the keke.
People around us said, “Don’t worry, Hausa people always return what is not theirs.” We waited. Morning passed. Afternoon came. Night fell. Nobody returned anything.
By the next day, we accepted the loss. Another lesson from the road.
But that journey was not done teaching us.
Because what happened after settling in Funtua what the gifts caused, what the road brought back to us, and the secret my granny finally told me changed how I see travel, trust, and family forever.
