A Poor Boy Helps an Old Man — A Nigerian Story That Will Touch Your Heart

Sunday was a poor young boy living in a small village. He had no father, and his mother struggled every day to feed them. Most mornings, Sunday went from farm to farm, helping people just to earn food.

One hot afternoon, as Sunday was returning home, he saw an old man walking slowly along the narrow path. The man was weak and bent with age. A heavy load of firewood rested on his head, and his legs were shaking.

Many people passed by.

No one stopped to help.

Sunday felt pity in his heart. He ran to the old man.

“Baba, please let me help you,” Sunday said.

The old man looked at the boy and shook his head. “My son, this load is very heavy.”

Sunday smiled. “Let us carry it together.”

He lifted part of the load onto his head and walked with the old man until they reached his house. When they arrived, the old man sat down, breathing deeply. Tears filled his eyes.

“My son, many people are strong, but few are kind,” the old man said.

“My name is Father Ibrahim. What is yours?”

“My name is Sunday, Baba,” the boy replied.

Father Ibrahim tried to give him money, but Sunday refused.

“I did not help you because of money,” Sunday said. “You remind me of my grandfather.”

Father Ibrahim nodded and smiled. “Kindness never goes unrewarded,” he said.

THE PROMISE

Some weeks later, Father Ibrahim called his son who lived in the city.

“There is a boy in my village named Sunday,” he said.

“He helped me when no one else did. Please find him and help him.”

The son agreed.

One morning, a big car entered the village. People gathered in surprise. The man stepped out and asked, “Who is Sunday?”

Sunday came forward quietly.

“You helped my father,” the man said. “From today, your life will change.”

Sunday was sent to school. His mother was given support to start a small business. Their suffering slowly came to an end.

THE LESSON

Father Ibrahim’s words spread through the village:

When you help an old person, you help your own future.

Kindness never dies.

From that day on, children in the village learned to respect and help the elderly, because Sunday’s kindness became a story everyone remembered.
