Outrage in Delta: Police Brutalise Motorist, Drive Away With His Car as Video Sparks Investigation
Public outrage has erupted in Delta State after a viral video showed some police officers allegedly brutalising a young motorist and unlawfully driving away with his car in Asaba, the state capital.
The disturbing footage, obtained on Tuesday, captured at least three officers confronting the victim after stopping his vehicle. While two officers restrained the young man by holding his hands, another officer reportedly entered his car and drove off, leaving the victim helpless.
Despite struggling and attempting to chase after his vehicle, the man was forcefully blocked by the officers, who prevented him from running after the car as it was driven away. The officers were widely condemned online for acting without professionalism and showing blatant disregard for the citizen’s rights.
Reacting to the viral video, the Delta State Police Command confirmed awareness of the incident and condemned the actions of the officers involved. The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, described the conduct as “unprofessional” and assured the public that an investigation had commenced.
Edafe disclosed that he had personally visited the officers’ base, noting that the vehicle was not found there, but stressed that the command was actively looking into the matter and promised that appropriate disciplinary measures would be taken.
As of the time of filing this report, it remains unclear whether the officers involved have been identified or suspended, or if the victim’s vehicle has been recovered. The incident has further fueled public concerns over police brutality and abuse of power in Nigeria.
