Amnesty International Accuses Nigerian Government of Failing to Probe Killing of 150 Pro-Biafra Protesters

Amnesty International has criticised the Nigerian government for failing to investigate the killing of at least 150 pro-Biafra protesters in the South-East during the administration of late President Muhammadu Buhari.

In a statement issued on Monday via its official X account, Amnesty International Nigeria said security agencies, led by the military, carried out a campaign of extrajudicial executions and violence against peaceful pro-Biafra campaigners between August 2015 and August 2016.

According to the human rights organisation, the crackdown resulted in the deaths of at least 150 unarmed protesters who were exercising their right to peaceful assembly.

Amnesty described the actions of the security forces as a “chilling campaign” of unlawful killings, adding that nearly a decade after the incidents, victims and survivors have been abandoned by the state.

The organisation said no credible investigations have been initiated and no perpetrators have been brought to justice, despite what it described as overwhelming evidence of serious human rights violations.Amnesty International called on Nigerian authorities to urgently investigate the killings, ensure accountability, and provide justice and reparations to victims and their families.
