₦496 Million for Photocopiers? Nigerians Ask Hard Questions About 2026 Budget

The Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), headed by George Akume, plans to spend ₦496 million in 2026 on just three heavy-duty photocopier machines and office furniture, according to Nigeria’s budget documents.

The budget line states it is for the “purchase and installation of heavy-duty photocopy machines for cabinet affairs offices and supply of office furniture.”

But this is not the first time the OSGF has raised eyebrows.

In 2025 alone, the same office budgeted ₦400 million for the purchase and distribution of grinding machines across different federal constituencies.

Another government agency, the Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology, also budgeted ₦195 million for grinding machines for selected communities.

Beyond budget allocations, public records on Govspend show that ₦9.6 million was spent on branded towels for Akume’s 70th birthday celebration in 2023 — paid from public funds.

All of this is happening amid calls from civil society groups demanding Akume’s suspension over alleged links to an ₦80 billion fraud, with questions over why investigations appear stalled.

At a time when Nigerians are battling inflation, unemployment, and rising living costs, many are asking:

  • Are these expenditures justified?
  • Why do basic office items and “empowerment tools” cost hundreds of millions?
  • Who truly benefits from these budget lines?
  • Is accountability still a priority in governance?

What do you think — normal government spending or another case of misplaced priorities?
