Bandits Kill Four, Burn Homes in Renewed Attack on Wawa Community, Niger State

At least four residents have been killed and several homes destroyed following a renewed bandit attack on Wawa community in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.

The attack, which occurred on Friday evening between 8:00pm and 8:30pm, reportedly targeted Damala village, located behind the Woko–Daba mining area. Local sources said the assailants struck suddenly, killing four people and carting away all livestock belonging to villagers into nearby forests.

A resident who narrowly escaped the raid said homes were set ablaze before anyone could react. Sources also confirmed that a church and multiple residential buildings were burned, leading to widespread destruction and the displacement of several families.

Witnesses described the assault as swift and violent, noting the absence of security personnel at the time of the attack. Villagers said fear has gripped the community, with residents now reluctant to visit farms or places of worship.

Community leaders and residents have renewed calls for urgent intervention from both state and federal authorities, demanding the deployment of security forces to Borgu and surrounding areas to prevent further attacks.

The incident highlights growing insecurity in rural and mining communities in Niger State, particularly in forested areas that have increasingly become targets of armed bandits.
