Tinubu Grants Posthumous Pardon to Ken Saro-Wiwa, Ogoni Nine

President Bola Tinubu has granted a full presidential pardon to the late Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight other members of the Ogoni Nine, nearly three decades after their execution by the Abacha regime in 1995.

The pardon, announced during Tinubu’s address to a joint session of the National Assembly on Democracy Day, was granted under the president’s constitutional powers of Prerogative of Mercy.

Describing the Ogoni Nine as national heroes, Tinubu also conferred posthumous national honours: Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) on Saro-Wiwa, and Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) on his eight kinsmen — Saturday Dobee, Nordu Eawo, Daniel Gbooko, Paul Levera, Felix Nuate, Baribor Bera, Barinem Kiobel, and John Kpuine.

“I shall also be exercising my powers under the Prerogative of Mercy to grant these national heroes a full pardon,” Tinubu said. “Others will be announced later in conjunction with the National Council of State.”

The Ogoni Nine were environmental activists and community leaders who protested oil exploitation in the Niger Delta. Their execution in 1995 sparked international outrage and condemnation from global human rights groups.
