Kogi Kidnap Survivor Reveals How He Escaped After Being Forced Through Rivers, Alleges Bandits Work With Locals

A student from Benue State, Ojaja Joseph, has shared a chilling account of how he escaped after being kidnapped along the Osokoko–Obajana Road in Kogi State. Joseph, who was travelling to Abuja for his SIWES programme, said he was abducted alongside other passengers on Thursday.

In a video shared by Egbe Mekun Parrot, he narrated how the gunmen marched them deep into the forest, forcing them to cross multiple rivers.

“We crossed around seven rivers. At a point we reached a very deep river covered with trees,” he said.

Joseph described the kidnappers as heavily armed, noting that some weapons were so large they had to be mounted on a motorcycle.

He said he took the chance to escape when night fell, hiding in the bush before finding his way out. But upon emerging, he encountered three men he initially thought were good Samaritans — until he realised they were collaborators with the kidnappers.

“They started calling the kidnappers, asking why they allowed someone to escape,” he recalled.

Sensing danger, Joseph tricked them by pretending he wanted to use the toilet — then ran for his life.

He also revealed disturbing details about the kidnappers' organisation, including seeing their wives inside huts in the forest praising them for their actions.

The incident is one of several attacks reported recently along the Osokoko–Obajana axis and other routes in Kogi State, where bandit activities have escalated despite government assurances. Travellers continue to face threats as kidnappings, killings and extortion increase across the region.
