Rivers Unseals LGA Secretariats: Police Withdraw Amid New Leadership

Following the swearing-in of newly elected local government chairmen in Rivers State, the police have withdrawn personnel and reopened all sealed Local Government Area Secretariats.

The Rivers State Police Command has reopened all 23 Local Government Area (LGA) Secretariats following the election and swearing-in of new local government chairmen by Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

The secretariats had been sealed since June due to a dispute between Caretaker Committee Chairmen aligned with Governor Fubara and the outgoing chairmen loyal to Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.

A statement by the Command’s spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the unsealing. Acting on the orders of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, newly deployed Commissioner of Police, CP Mustapha Bala, directed the immediate withdrawal of police officers previously stationed at the secretariats.

This action follows the recent local government elections conducted by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) and the swearing-in of 23 new chairmen by Governor Fubara at the Government House in Port Harcourt.

The Rivers Police Command assures the public of its commitment to maintaining peace and urges residents to remain calm as they continue to monitor the situation.
