Bishop John Perumbalath of Liverpool has stepped down following allegations of sexual assault and harassment aired by a British broadcaster. Despite denying any wrongdoing, he cited "trial by media" as making his position untenable.
The Church of England previously investigated and found the claims unsubstantiated, while police took no further action on an initial allegation. Perumbalath stated he was resigning to prevent the issue from becoming a distraction.
His resignation comes amid heightened scrutiny of the Church, following Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby’s recent departure over handling past abuse cases.
