John Sykes, the renowned guitarist celebrated for his influential roles in Thin Lizzy and Whitesnake, has passed away at the age of 65 after a courageous battle with cancer.

 

Early Life and Musical Beginnings

Born in Reading, Berkshire, in 1959, John Sykes was drawn to music from a young age, inspired by guitar legends like Jimmy Page and Ritchie Blackmore. He began his musical journey with the band Streetfighter, where he honed his skills and developed his distinctive sound.

Contributions to Thin Lizzy

In 1982, Sykes joined Thin Lizzy, contributing to their final studio album, "Thunder and Lightning." His powerful guitar work and dynamic presence were instrumental in shaping the band's sound during this period.

Success with Whitesnake

Sykes's tenure with Whitesnake marked a significant chapter in his career. He co-wrote and played on the band's 1984 album "Slide It In," which achieved commercial success. His contributions continued with the 1987 self-titled album, featuring hits like "Is This Love" and "Still of the Night." Despite internal conflicts leading to his departure before the album's release, Sykes's impact on Whitesnake's legacy remains undeniable.

 

Formation of Blue Murder and Solo Career

After leaving Whitesnake, Sykes formed Blue Murder, aiming to create a supergroup with Tony Franklin and Carmine Appice. The band released their self-titled debut album in 1989, which received positive reviews but did not achieve significant commercial success. Sykes continued his musical journey with a solo career, releasing four studio albums and maintaining a dedicated fan base, particularly in Japan.
