Efforts to Restore National Grid Ongoing, Says TCN

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) announced that efforts to restore the national grid, which collapsed on October 14th, 2024, are almost complete

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) announced on Tuesday that the restoration of the national grid, which collapsed on Monday, October 14th, 2024, is nearly complete. According to Ndidi Mbah, TCN’s Public Affairs General Manager, the grid experienced a partial disturbance at around 6:48 p.m. on Monday. Immediate recovery efforts began with Azura Power Station initiating the blackstart process.

By 10:24 a.m. on Tuesday, the grid recovery had advanced significantly but faced a minor setback. Despite this, TCN has restored bulk power to about 90% of its substations nationwide, including the Abuja area and other major distribution centers.

The Ibom Gas generating station remained unaffected and continued supplying power to parts of the South-South, such as Eket, Ekim, Uyo, and Itu, during the grid failure.

An investigation into the cause of the incident will be conducted once the grid is fully restored. This marks one of several grid collapses this year, with previous incidents recorded on February 4th, March 28th, April 15th, July 6th, and August 5th.

In April, TCN's Independent System Operator (ISO) Executive Director, Nafisat Ali, explained to the Senate Committee on Power that grid collapses result from various factors, including gas supply issues, poor coordination of power plants, and inadequate generation availability.
