Omoyele Sowore, a prominent rights activist, was questioned by the Force Intelligence Bureau in Abuja on Monday over a viral video accusing police officers of extortion.
In the video, Sowore claimed that officers stopped a car he was traveling in on Murtala Muhammed Airport Road in Lagos and engaged in illegal activities. The footage, which went viral, shows an altercation between Sowore and the officers who had flagged the vehicle down.
Following the video’s widespread reaction, the police invited Sowore for questioning. He arrived at the Force Intelligence Bureau accompanied by his lawyers and a group of supporters, some of whom sang solidarity songs.
This is not Sowore's first brush with the authorities. In September 2024, he was briefly detained at Lagos’s Murtala Muhammed International Airport in connection with the #EndBadGovernance protests. Earlier in February 2024, the Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed charges of treasonable felony against him, following a request by the Attorney General of the Federation to discontinue the case.
