The Nigerian military has confirmed the death of 22 soldiers during a recent operation in the North-East, where they were engaged in a clearance mission against terrorists.
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) reported that the casualties occurred during an operation at the Timbuktu Triangle, a known terrorist stronghold. The operation, which began on January 25, involved a three-pronged strategy to dismantle terrorist forces in the region. While the mission resulted in the tragic loss of 22 troops and several others being wounded, the military also achieved significant successes.
According to Colonel Edward Buba, the Director of Defence Media Operations, over 70 terrorists were killed during the operation, including several key commanders. Among those neutralized were Talha, the Special Forces Commander; Mallam Umar, the Operations Commander; and Abu Yazeed, the Brigade Commander.
Despite facing significant challenges, such as attacks involving improvised explosive devices (IEDs), including suicide bombers and explosive-laden vehicles, the troops were able to carry out their mission successfully. The military also managed to thwart several terrorist attempts, including shooting down drones used by the militants.
The ongoing fight against insurgency in the region has claimed over 40,000 lives since its onset 15 years ago, displacing approximately two million people. The violence has spread to neighboring countries, leading to the formation of a regional force aimed at combating the militants.
