A couple narrowly escaped death on Wednesday when a container fell on their Lexus SUV near the Toyota bus stop along the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway in Lagos.
According to a statement issued on Thursday by Margaret Adeseye, the Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the incident occurred in the evening following a distress call.
Adeseye explained that the container fell on the rear side of the vehicle while it was in motion, trapping the occupants inside.
"A male adult, approximately 45 years old, and a female adult, around 37 years old (names withheld), were rescued from the jaws of death by the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service," the statement read.
The accident involved a Lexus Jeep 350 with registration number EKY 251 HW and a Mack trailer carrying two 20-foot containers, with registration number BDG 513 XW. The incident occurred around 6:35 PM at the busy Toyota bus stop on the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway, inward Isolo.
Bystanders initially attempted to assist before firefighters arrived to free the victims from the wreckage unharmed.
The trailer driver, who also escaped without injury, joined the couple in undergoing trauma therapy to assess their well-being.
Following the rescue, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) cleared the vehicle debris, while officers from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) worked with the Nigeria Police from the Ilasamaja Division to ease the resulting traffic congestion.
The operation was successfully concluded, restoring normalcy to the highway.
