Ex-Lawmaker Calls for Obasa’s Suspension

Obasa Should Be Suspended for Impersonation, Says Ex-Lawmaker. Read more...

Olumuyiwa Jimoh, a former Deputy Majority Leader of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has called for the suspension of Mudashiru Obasa for insisting on being the Speaker of the House, despite his removal.

Jimoh made the statement on Channels Television's Sunrise Daily on Monday, claiming that Obasa's actions amounted to impersonation. He emphasized that Obasa's insistence on remaining the Speaker violates the law, and he believes Obasa should be suspended for it.

On January 13, 2025, Obasa was removed as Speaker after over two-thirds of the 40-member House voted him out, citing allegations of misconduct and other offences. His deputy, Mojisola Meranda, was elected as the new Speaker, marking a historic moment as the first female to lead the legislative body in Lagos State.

Despite the removal, Obasa has continued to claim he remains the Speaker. On January 25, 2025, he stated that he would remain in the role until the situation was resolved, criticizing the militarization of the assembly complex during the impeachment process and claiming that his removal happened in his absence while he was outside the country.

However, Jimoh pointed out that Obasa doesn't need to be physically present in the House for his impeachment to be valid, referencing Section 92, Subsection 2 of the Constitution.

Jimoh also recalled his own removal from his position as Deputy Majority Leader, claiming that Obasa coerced members into signing for his removal. He explained that his opposition to Obasa’s policies, which he deemed anti-democratic, led to his ousting.

Jimoh has called for anti-graft agencies to investigate the allegations against Obasa.
