Students of the University of Ibadan (UI) have protested against the ongoing 82-day power outage at the University College Hospital (UCH), which has disrupted academic and healthcare activities.
The power failure at UCH, a key training ground for medical students, is attributed to debts owed to the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC). Students have been unable to study effectively due to the prolonged blackout.
UI Students' Union President, Comrade Bolaji Aweda, expressed frustration over the situation, calling it a "power play" between the UCH and UI management. The blackout, he said, has had a devastating impact on student life and academic progress.
Among the students' demands are the immediate restoration of power to UCH and other Nigerian hospitals facing similar issues, the implementation of a 50% tariff discount announced by the Federal Ministry of Power, and reforms to improve Nigeria's healthcare sector.
The protesters marched from UCH to the Oyo State Government Secretariat, where they were received by the Executive Assistant on Security, Sunday Odukoya, who assured them that the state government would engage with the federal government to resolve the crisis.
