Court Orders Permanent Forfeiture Of $49,700 Recovered From Ex-INEC REC

Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the permanent forfeiture of $49,700 recovered from former INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Sokoto, Nura Ali, during the 2023 general elections.
The ruling followed an application by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) after no claimant came forward during the public notice period.
Justice Nwite, while granting the motion, said the request was “meritorious”, and the funds — suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activity — will now be forfeited to the Federal Government.
The ICPC had earlier argued that INEC does not pay its staff in foreign currency and that the funds were found during a joint DSS and ICPC search at Ali’s residence in Kano.
Ali reportedly admitted receiving $150,000 as a ‘gift’ from former Sokoto governors Aminu Tambuwal and Aliyu Wamakko, part of which was seized during the operation.
