Tinubu Appoints Oluyede as New Chief of Defence Staff, Replaces Musa and Other Service Chiefs
President Bola Tinubu has announced a major shake-up in the Nigerian military leadership, appointing General Olufemi Oluyede as the new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) to replace General Christopher Musa.
In the new appointments, Major-General W. Shaibu becomes the Chief of Army Staff, Air Vice Marshal S.K. Aneke takes over as Chief of Air Staff, and Rear Admiral I. Abbas is the new Chief of Naval Staff. The Chief of Defence Intelligence, Major-General E.A.P. Undiendeye, retains his position.
According to a statement issued on Friday by the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare, the changes are part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s national security architecture.
“The President expresses profound appreciation to the outgoing Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, and other Service Chiefs for their patriotic service and leadership,” the statement read.
“He urges the newly appointed Service Chiefs to justify the confidence reposed in them by enhancing professionalism, vigilance, and unity within the Armed Forces.”
All appointments take immediate effect.
General Oluyede, who previously served as the Chief of Army Staff, assumed that position following the death of General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja last year.
The outgoing chiefs — General Musa, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, and Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar — were appointed in June 2023 and have led several operations against Boko Haram, ISWAP, and armed bandits in northern Nigeria.
While their tenure recorded key successes, continued insecurity across parts of the country has fueled growing demands for a change in strategy and leadership.
