Mining: Akpoti-Uduaghan Calls for Full Transparency, Seeks Explanation Over Alleged Missing Funds in Solid Minerals Sector

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (Kogi Central) has urged the federal government to publish all agreements and MOUs with investors in the mining and solid minerals sector, stressing that transparency must come before accountability.
Speaking during a Senate session on solid minerals oversight, she called on the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development to use the Freedom of Information Act to make all contracts public—both to the National Assembly and citizens—and to post them online for easy access. She argued that openness would build public trust and prevent the corruption and secrecy that have marred Nigeria’s oil industry.
Akpoti-Uduaghan lamented that despite Kogi Central’s 52 mineral deposits, her people remain impoverished while others profit. She expressed shock at learning that gemstones like ruby, emerald, and tourmaline are being mined in some states without visible national benefit.
While commending Minister Dele Alake for his reform efforts, she warned against rushing the process without due diligence, cautioning that the solid minerals sector must not become another corruption-prone industry.
The Senator also demanded details of inflows and balances in the National Resources Fund, which receives 1.68% of special funds from the Federation Account, asking for a full disclosure of how much has been generated and spent in recent years.
