26 Traders Die in Kogi Boat Mishap, Government Expresses Condolences

The Kogi State Government has confirmed the death of 26 traders in a boat accident on the River Niger.

The victims were travelling from Ibaji Local Government Area of Kogi to Ilushi market in Edo State when the mishap occurred on the evening of Tuesday, September 30, 2025.

In a statement on Wednesday, Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, described the incident as a “heartbreaking loss,” noting that at least 26 lives were lost.

Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families and directed the State Emergency Management Agency to work with local authorities to provide immediate assistance.

The governor also pledged to strengthen safety measures on waterways in partnership with federal agencies, stressing the need to prevent future tragedies.

He further urged riverine communities to avoid overloading boats and to always use life jackets and other safety precautions when travelling by water.

“The Government of Kogi State stands firmly with the people of Ibaji LGA in this difficult period,” the statement read.
