Gridlock Nightmare: Commuters Trek for Miles on Ibadan-Lagos Highway as Traffic Crisis Deepens

What’s meant to be a smooth intercity journey has turned into a daily struggle for thousands of Nigerians. The Ibadan-Lagos Expressway, a major economic lifeline, has once again made headlines for all the wrong reasons.

According to a recent report by @NigerianTribune, the persistent gridlock along the ever-busy highway has reached unbearable levels, forcing passengers to abandon vehicles and trek long distances just to make it to their destinations.

The gridlock, reportedly stretching for hours, is not just caused by high traffic volume — it’s made worse by ongoing road construction, poorly coordinated traffic management, and frequent breakdowns of trucks clogging key lanes.

“It took me 3 hours to move less than 5 kilometers. At some point, I just got down and walked,” one frustrated commuter shared.

Beyond inconvenience, this daily traffic ordeal is affecting livelihoods and safety:

  • Office workers arriving late (or not at all).

  • School children missing classes.

  • Vendors losing money as perishable goods rot in transit.

  • Increased risk of roadside crime for stranded commuters.

This isn’t just a traffic issue — it’s a public infrastructure failure that continues to impact everyday Nigerians. Efficient roadways are the backbone of any modern city, and this gridlock signals a larger problem in urban planning and traffic enforcement.
