Kaduna–Kano Rail 53% Completed, Kano–Maradi Line to Reach Katsina by December – Minister
Minister of Transportation, Senator Said Alkali, says the Kaduna–Kano standard gauge rail project has reached 53% completion, while the Kano–Maradi line will extend to Katsina by December 2025.
Speaking at the 2nd International Railway Conference in Abuja on Monday, Alkali noted that the Kaduna–Kano project had advanced significantly under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, moving from 15% completion at inception to 53% today. He reaffirmed that the line will be fully completed and inaugurated by December 2026.
“The 387 km Kano–Maradi line, with an extension to Dutse, has progressed from 5% to 60%. While the Kaduna–Kano project targets December 2026 for completion, the Kano–Maradi line will reach Katsina by December this year and be ready for full inauguration by March 2027,” Alkali said.
He described the projects as vital trade and integration corridors, particularly the Kano–Maradi route, which he said would “open access for Nigerian goods into Niger Republic and beyond.”
The Minister also highlighted other milestones in Nigeria’s rail sector, including rehabilitation of the Lagos–Kano narrow gauge for freight, approval of modern bus terminals across the six geopolitical zones, deployment of dual-fuel locomotive technology on the Abuja–Kaduna line, and ongoing training of transport professionals.
Alkali emphasised that rail development is key to national unity, economic growth, and regional integration, adding that the government has facilitated funding through the China Development Bank and Federal Government counterpart contributions.
He urged stakeholders at the conference to embrace innovative operational techniques, sustainable financing, and partnerships to accelerate Nigeria’s railway modernisation drive.
