Civil Society Urges National Assembly to Fast-Track Electoral Reforms Ahead of 2027 Polls

The Nigerian Civil Situation Room has called on the National Assembly to expedite action on pending electoral reforms and ensure their passage into law before the 2027 general elections.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Monday, Celestine Odo, Head of Programmes at ActionAid Nigeria, said Nigeria’s democracy is at a critical point, threatened by governance deficits and systemic corruption.

“The Situation Room calls on the National Assembly to finalise and pass into law reforms that will restore confidence in our elections and ultimately strengthen democracy,” Odo stated.

The group also urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deliver credible, free, and fair elections, particularly in the upcoming off-cycle governorship polls in Anambra, Ekiti, and Osun states.

While commending Nigeria’s civil rule since 1999, the Situation Room stressed that challenges like systemic corruption, cultural divisions, and weak governance structures continue to undermine democratic consolidation.
