Strange But True: Flight Attendant Reveals Bizarre Rules Pilots Must Follow — From Meals to Mid-Air Marriages!
From avoiding pasta poisoning to letting farts fly at 30,000 feet — these are the quirky rules keeping your pilot focused and your flight safe!
Argentine flight attendant Barbara Bacilieri, known online as Barbie Bac with nearly 5 million followers, has revealed some little-known but fascinating aviation rules that pilots follow for safety reasons.
1. Pilots Eat Different Meals
Forget sharing! Pilots are required to eat different dishes — usually chicken for one, pasta for the other — to prevent both from getting food poisoning, which could be catastrophic mid-air.
“The commander chooses first, and the copilot takes the alternative,” says Bacilieri, who works for Spain's Vueling airline.
However, some pilots like Charlie Page say this tradition is fading due to improved hygiene in airline catering. Ironically, pilots are more likely to get sick from local meals before the flight.
2. Farting Is (Kind of) Mandatory
Yes, you read that right. Pilots are encouraged not to hold in farts — because at high altitudes, gas expansion can cause serious discomfort.
“It’s better for pilots to release gas than be distracted by it while flying,” Bacilieri shared.
Though not an official rule, studies by British and Danish doctors back this advice for the health of everyone on board.
3. Pilots Can Officiate Marriages (In Emergencies Only!)
No, your mid-air proposal can’t turn into an instant wedding — unless it's a matter of life and death.
“Only in cases of extreme emergency — like a last wish during a medical crisis — can a pilot marry passengers,” Bacilieri explained.
