CDS Musa Urges Community Vigilance to Curb Benue Killings

Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has called for the training and deployment of trusted youths in Benue communities as vigilantes under military supervision — a strategy earlier applied in Borno State — to combat rising terrorist attacks.
Speaking at a meeting with traditional rulers in Makurdi on Tuesday, General Musa stressed the need for community involvement in ending the killings and warned against sabotage, urging monarchs to expose criminal elements within their domains.
Meanwhile, Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule visited Benue Governor Hyacinth Alia to condole with victims of the recent Yelewata massacre, donating ₦150 million to support displaced persons.
The Defence Chief, who has been in the state since Monday, said the military would revise its approach. The surge in attacks by suspected herdsmen has killed over 160 people in two months, with 59 killed in a single night in Yelewata.
The attacks have drawn national and international condemnation, including from Pope Leo XIV. President Bola Tinubu, expected in the state on Wednesday, has tasked security chiefs to end the bloodshed and urged Governor Alia to lead peace talks among warring groups.
CDS Musa emphasized the importance of trust and collaboration, saying:
“We can't fight this alone. The community must be involved. There are insiders aiding these attacks—we must unite to stop them.”
