William Kumuyi

William Kumuyi is a Nigerian pastor, author, and evangelist best known as the founder and General Superintendent of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry. He is also the convener of Global Crusade with Kumuyi, and he is widely known for holiness preaching, Bible teaching, and disciplined Christian living.

Early Life and Background

William Folorunso Kumuyi was born on 6 June 1941 in Erin Odo Ijesha, Osun State, Nigeria. He was raised in a strict Christian home, and both his official church biography and other public profiles say that his early years were shaped by Bible reading, hymns, and regular church life. He later said he drifted for a time during secondary school before becoming born again on 5 April 1964.

Education

Kumuyi attended Mayflower School in Ikenne for his secondary education. He later studied Mathematics at the University of Ibadan, where he earned a first class degree in 1967, and then took a postgraduate course in Education at the University of Lagos.

Career Before Ministry

Before becoming known worldwide as a preacher, Kumuyi was an academic. His official biography says he returned to Mayflower School to teach mathematics after graduating, and later became a lecturer at the University of Lagos. That academic background helped shape the clear, teaching centered style that later became one of the strongest marks of his ministry.

Beginning of Ministry

Kumuyi began a small Bible study group in Lagos in 1973, starting with about 15 people. That modest fellowship later grew into the Deeper Christian Life Ministry, which developed into a major international church movement. Official ministry profiles now describe his work as extending across many countries through church branches, books, conferences, and large evangelistic meetings.

He became known for strong Bible exposition, holiness teaching, and evangelism. His Global Crusade with Kumuyi platform says its meetings and media outreach have reached people in more than 180 countries, while Deeper Life and GCK materials describe him as a prolific Christian author and one of the most visible evangelical voices connected to Nigeria.

Personal Life

Kumuyi married Abiodun Kumuyi in 1980, and they had two children, Jeremiah and John. After Abiodun died in 2009, he married Esther Folashade Kumuyi in 2010.

Controversies and Public Criticism

William Kumuyi’s public image has also faced criticism over the years, especially around the strict church culture associated with Deeper Life. In 2025, he publicly said that some long standing marriage rules in the church, including the ban on intending couples visiting each other and the compulsory six month courtship period, were administrative guidelines rather than direct biblical commands. That statement drew attention because it showed that some of the church’s strict practices had been debated even within the ministry.

He also drew public reaction in 2021 after arriving at an Abuja crusade in a limousine, with critics arguing that the image did not fit the ministry’s long standing emphasis on modest living, while supporters defended him. The incident became one of the more visible public debates around simplicity, image, and wealth in Nigerian church leadership.

Legacy

William Kumuyi is remembered as one of the most influential holiness preachers to come out of Nigeria. His story is that of a brilliant mathematics teacher who turned to full time ministry and built one of the country’s best known Christian movements. At the same time, his legacy also includes public debate over strict church rules and the expectations placed on major religious leaders.
